Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Arguably the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This means that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.
Nurse Quality
This facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Our nursing rating is mostly tied to a nursing home's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides an incredible 4.8 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Out of this total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this place also fared well in several of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the number of its residents suffering falls leading to serious injury, this facility performed better than the national average. This is often a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at is short-term care. This nursing home was awarded an above average short-term care grade, with a grade of B+ in the category. Our short-term care grades are arguably most critical for residents in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually requires more highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final datapoint we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 40.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we looked at proved to be this nursing home's worst category. However, even in its weakest link we still awarded it a respectable grade of B- in long-term care. Long-term care grades are based on the facility's volume of nursing services. This includes a vast scope of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine healthcare services. On top of assessing the very solid quantity of care provided by aids and other staff at this facility, we also were happy with the facility's vaccination record. For example, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 95.8209 percent of its residents, which is very respectable. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.64 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
