Facility Inspections
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection score. Its inspection grade was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave this facility an A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively insignificant. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a strong long-term care grade. As a matter of fact, we gave them a grade of B+ in this category, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
Sadly, this facility's third best category was short-term care. However, with a D in this area, it still performed somewhat badly. Short-term care grades are meaningful for people seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more highly-skilled nursing. This means a vast scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 4.2 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
The last area we rated was nursing. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D for nursing, leaving this as its worst category. Nursing scores are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing scores. This place performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care.
