While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B for that category, which is one of our better scores. Facilities that do not fare well in long-term care typically aren't as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine medical care we looked at. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 62.735847 percent of its residents. This is pretty significantly less than average. To our surprise, this place actually fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.

This nursing home wound up receiving a rock-bottom grade in our short-term care area. It received an F in this area. In the category of short-term care, we try to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 4.1 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, around half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.

The final category we assessed was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F in this area, which is an abysmal score. The nursing score assesses a handful of data points, but the primary one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This particular facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This figure is well below the national average. On top of receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this place was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents suffering pressure ulcers and found this nursing home was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this metric. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic really pulled down this facility's nursing score substantially.
