We also wanted to emphasize that this nursing home earned near flawless health inspections recently. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be relatively minor. This facility was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Adding to its impressive accomplishments in other areas, we awarded this facility a score of A for its short-term care grade. Short-term care ratings are critical for prospective residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires additional skilled nursing services. This means a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final statistic we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from the facility. This place performed as well as just about any facility in Texas in this area with 63.9 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, less than half of their short-term patients ever return home.

We also want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility was awarded a high-end grade of A in our long-term care category. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the elite quantity of care provided by aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the nursing home's vaccination statistics. By way of example, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. The last datapoint we looked at was its hospitalization rate. Although it had 2.13 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was middle of the road due to it having more complicated patients.

Turning to our fourth area, this nursing home also excelled in the nursing category. We gave it an A- for that category. This topped off a straight A report card. Nursing ratings are mostly associated with the facility's nurse staffing. This facility provides an impressive 4.7 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is among the highest figures in the state. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients sustaining falls leading to major injury, this place performed as well as any facility in the nation. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
