Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our inspections rating. Our inspection grades weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this area usually have few severe deficiencies. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.
Nurse Quality
Building on its impressive profile, this facility also excelled in the area of nursing. In fact, we gave it an B+ for that category. Our nursing rating is mostly associated with a nursing home's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the third area, this facility also earned a grade of B for its short-term care rating. This is an above average grade in this category. Our short-term care grades are arguably more meaningful for patients in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires additional skilled nursing. This means not just nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that it fared better than most nursing homes in the country in this area with 55 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
Our next category is long-term care, in which we gave this facility a C in that category. For long-term care residents, the primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. We were optimistic to learn that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 3.49 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities based on the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
