Even though this nursing home's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in our short-term care rating. In fact, we gave it a C for that category, which isn't bad. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to save its otherwise poor profile. In calculating our short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to devise a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. One of this nursing home's strengths is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its patients. The last metric we looked at in this area is the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that it performed respectably with 47.7 percent of its residents returning home.

We also want to note that this facility was given an F for its long-term care score. For residents seeking a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 94.07665 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. We were far less impressed with its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 5.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is more than double the national average. This is definitely an alarming statistic.

This facility ended up receiving rock bottom score in our nursing category. It received an F in this category. Our nursing score features numerous subcategories. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This nursing home averages 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. On top of ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this facility also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This place was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these metrics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics helped pull down this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.

Moving on our last category of inspections, this nursing home received a horrible grade. With facilities that received this poor of an inspection grade, we would scrutinize any severe deficiencies on its inspection report. This facility had 13 deficiencies by CMS. The only positive thing we can say is that none of its deficiencies were in the categories that suggest they caused a risk to resident safety or health. Finally, we would like to draw your attention to the fact that this place was assessed significant government fines recently of over $100,000. This often suggests that a poor performance has been an issue for more than one year.
