Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is it received an A+ in our inspections category. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Arguably the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Adding to its elite assessments in other areas, we gave this nursing home a score of A for its long-term care score. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 76.79083 percent of its patients. This is somewhat below what we were hoping for but still a reasonably acceptable figure. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, at least this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This nursing home also received a very impressive short-term care score. Indeed, this turned out to be this nursing home's third most impressive category grade. In that category, this facility received a score of A-. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we size up a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This rating is frequently a meaningful assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5.9 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

In our final area, we gave this nursing home a A+ for its nursing rating. This completed an elite report card. There are a number of data points included in this category. Most of these subcategories are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a system of turning a patient at least once a day.
