Nurse Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ for nursing. Nursing scores are based largely on nurse staffing levels. With 6.4 hours of nursing care per patient per day, this facility surpassed the vast majority of facilities. Finally, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. It performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection grades are tied to many pieces of information found on the a nursing home's inspection reports. Places that score well in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded a fine long-term care score. In fact, this turned out to be this facility's third strongest category grade. In that category, this facility received a score of A. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to offering elite levels of nursing care, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This figure is also far higher than the average nursing home. This combination proved to be successful as this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the final category, this nursing home received an extremely favorable short-term care rating. We awarded it a grade of A in that category, giving this facility straight A's. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to judge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to provide higher levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its residents. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who returned to the community from this facility. It outperformed the overwhelming majority of nursing homes in this area with 59.5 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
