Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a strong facility is that it received an impressive inspection score. In fact, inspections is its best category. In this area, we gave it an A. Inspection scores are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded high scores in the category of long-term care as well. In fact, we awarded it one of our highest grades in that category with a area of A-. Facilities that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are kept in good health. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 99.619774 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. This nursing home was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.66 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we assessed was short-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a solid grade of C. Short-term care grades are typically used to measure a facility's rehabilitation services To have highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The final metric we considered in this category is the number of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This place performed better than most nursing homes in this area with 49.3 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we scored is nursing. We awarded this facility a C in that category. There are a number of subcategories within this area. Many of the data points are tied to levels of nurse staffing. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing ratings. This place was above average in two of the major statistics we focus on, with good scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are sometimes good measures of the quality of nursing care provided.
