In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this facility received an excellent long-term care grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in that category. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a deadly health condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not take any chances. This facility also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.42 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This facility also performed well in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a score of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. In our short-term care grade, we endeavor to create a valuable measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we assess the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home, which as an area this nursing home performed much more favorably. It outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the nation in this area with 65.7 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.

The last area we looked at is nursing. We gave this nursing home one of our higher scores in this area, with a grade of B. Even though this is not as high as many of its other scores, it is still an excellent grade. Nursing grades are based in large part on quantity of nursing care available. This nursing home averages 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by having a policy of turning a resident more frequently.
