On top of being a quality nursing home overall, this facility really excelled in nursing, where it received an A. In determining our nursing ratings, we assess both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the training levels of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving patients more frequently.

In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Arguably the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.

This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly is often a life or death ailment for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Switching gears to the final category, this nursing home received a respectable short-term care score. Even though this isn't quite as strong as a few of its other category grades, this is really not a terrible score. In our short-term care grade, we strive to forge a fair barometer for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess a facility's levels of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, based on the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last datapoint we considered in this category is the number of residents that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 1.8 percent of this facility's residents returned home. This figure was below the national average.
