Facility Inspections
On top of being a great facility overall, it also received A+ government inspections in recent years. Its inspections were nearly perfect. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area typically have few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also performed well in the category of long-term care, where we gave it a score of A-. Only a select group of nursing homes received a better grade in this category. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 99.655174 percent of its patients, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home is also above average in the category of short-term care, where it received a grade of B+. It performed more favorably than most facilities in this area. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we assess a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This rating is frequently a meaningful assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. This facility provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the nation with 57 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we scored was nursing, in which this facility received a grade of B-. While this turned out to be its least impressive category rating, this is nevertheless not a terrible score. In determining a nursing home's nursing grade, we weigh the amount of time nurses are caring for residents as well as the level of skill of those nurses. With 4 hours of nursing care per patient per day, this facility surpassed the national average. We also look at the qualifications of nurses and add more weight to hours worked by skilled nurses. Lastly, we also looked at a few nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed very well in this datapoint. This is typically a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a patient at least once a day.
