Facility Inspections
While this place's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. We would argue that one of the most critical factors in evaluating an inspection report is deficiencies. In this regard, we especially focus on the severity of the deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility's second highest score was short-term care. However, with a D in this area, it still performed relatively badly. Our short-term care grades are believed to be most meaningful for individuals requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of skilled nursing. This means not only nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Given its score in this area, we were not stunned to find that this nursing home was well below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse hours offered to its patients. Frankly, this was about what we expected here. The final item we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 40.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. This statistic was damning for this facility's short-term care grade.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was nursing, but even there it received a grade of just D. This is still a well below average grade. In computing our nursing scores, we weigh both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. Unfortunately, this facility also had abysmal marks in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This place was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this measure.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to our final area, this nursing home did not fare very well in this area either. With a poor grade of F in long-term care, this is really as bad as it gets. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to discover that this facility vaccinated 96.89119 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.57 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is not nearly as favorable than its vaccination record.
