Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in short-term care. Short-term care grades are typically employed to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to have higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who returned home from this facility. This place fared as well as just about any facility with 65.4 percent of its patients returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this statistic.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. The nursing rating consists of quite a few factors, but the primary consideration is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is more than the level of care offered by most nursing homes. Lastly, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we assessed. For example, it performed as well as any nursing home the state in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as predictive measures of the caliber of nursing care provided.
Facility Inspections
We awarded this nursing home an A- for our inspections rating. Our inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area generally have very few severe deficiencies. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we rated is long-term care, where this facility received a grade of B. While this turned out to be its lowest category grade, this is nevertheless a quality score. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to provide residents with better supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. One of the statistics we considered on top of nursing hours is vaccines. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a great way to minimize unnecessary deaths for the nursing home population. The last datapoint we looked at is its hospitalization rate. Although it had 2.39 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was middle of the road since it had more complicated patients.
