Facility Inspections
Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a B- for our inspections rating. In fact, the facility received very impressive inspection report this year. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite minor. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
We gave this facility just a D for our long-term care grade and that actually turned out to be its next best category. For prospective patients looking for a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to learn that this facility vaccinated 98.603355 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this place also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.

Nurse Quality
Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. Nursing ratings are based largely on quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home provides 0.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in computing our nursing ratings. This place fared well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we scored was short-term care. This facility was given an abysmal grade of F in that area. In the category of short-term care, we strive to qualify measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze a facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final statistic we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor metrics doomed this nursing home's short-term care score.
