Short-term Care Quality
This facility received an elite short-term care score. We gave this facility an A+ in this category, which really helped out its overall grade. In calculating these short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. The last datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in New Mexico in this area with 63 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this nursing home an A. Nursing ratings are based largely on nurse staffing levels. With 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient daily, this facility surpassed the national average. Lastly, this place also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its residents sustaining falls leading to serious injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home in the country. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's higher category grades was in the area of long-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a B+. When facilities receive this type of score in long-term care it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 97.637794 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Facility Inspections
The last category we assessed is inspections. We were surprised to find that this facility received such a poor inspection score. We gave it a just D in this area. Clearly, this score is not on par with some of this nursing home's other category grades. Inspection grades relate to a nursing home's inspections. Since this information is collected by independent inspectors, we tend to weight it pretty heavily. Inspection ratings weigh many items found on the nursing home's inspection reports. If you see too many deficiencies on the inspection reports, this is typically the worst sign. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to the well being of residents. This nursing home had 5 deficiencies on its inspection report. The only positive thing we found is that none of the deficiencies were in the categories that suggest that they caused a threat to resident safety or health. Lastly, this facility has received significant government fines in recent years.
