Facility Inspections

Grade: A

We want to point out that this facility really outperformed its overall grade in the category of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our best scores in that category with a grade of A. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this category most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few relatively minor dings aren't something to panic about.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this facility's better category grades was in the category of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a B. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly can be a life threatening ailment for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. This facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.12 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly better hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. The nursing rating consists of many subcategories, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This nursing home provides 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these datapoints as predictive measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Turning to our last category, we gave this nursing home a grade of D in our short-term care category. This was the facility's least impressive category grade. Of course, this score pulled down the nursing home's overall profile to some degree. Short-term care scores are based on the facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 42.6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
