Millbrook Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center is a large facility located in Lancaster, Texas. This nursing home received an F, which is really a bottom of the barrel score in our grading scheme. If you are not happy with this facility's pedestrian overall grade, you may find your options to be limited in Lancaster. The city has just three other nursing homes. We were surprisingly able to give this nursing home some positive feedback for our inspections category, which you can find more information about below.

While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually fared well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for that category, which is one of our better scores. Inspection ratings are based on several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important item to look for on these reports. You should especially avoid nursing homes that have severe deficiencies associated with endangerment of patients. This facility was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent threat to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

In addition, we gave this facility an F in the area of nursing care. Nursing ratings are largely associated with a facility's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. This nursing home also had terrible marks in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and we were disappointed. This facility was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this area. This is a bad sign in light of the fact that so many bed sores could be avoided with better nursing care. This metric helped pull down this facility's nursing grade quite a bit.

Another concern was the F this facility was given in the area of long-term care. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means the facility didn't perform well in our quality measures relating to resident care. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 92.81609 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be a bit below what we were hoping for but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. We were also disappointed with its hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 2.91 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is nearly twice the national average.

Moving on to the final category, this nursing home really didn't fare very well in this category either. Due to a poor grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as terrible as it gets. In determining our short-term care scores, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to devise a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. With a score of this caliber for this category, we weren't stunned to discover this place was well below average in the two key staffing figures we looked at. It offered significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 30.6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
