Facility Inspections
We want to point out that this nursing home outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in that category with a grade of A-. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with higher grades in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a favorable grade in long-term care. This nursing home received a B in this category, which happens to be one of our better grades. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality
This nursing home's nursing grade appears to be one of its better features. The facility received a grade of C in this category. Our nursing grade is primarily tied to the facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, our nursing scores also consider quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours per resident, this place performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is generally a reliable indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Some falls can be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we rated was short-term care, which is this facility's least impressive category. We gave it an F for this area, which is clearly a major disappointment. In our short-term care score, we seek to forge a meaningful barometer for rehabilitation services. In this process, we analyze the nursing home's scope of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. With a grade of this caliber in this category, we were not surprised to discover this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. It offered significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
