When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for patient care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. In addition to offering very impressive levels of nurse staffing, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 99.0099 percent of its patients. This figure is also much higher than the average nursing home. This combination proved to be effective as this place keeps its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.32 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
Another reason we graded this facility so favorably is that it was given an A+ short-term care grade. This is just about as dominant as it gets in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we look at a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This rating is considered to be a meaningful assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home is the gold standard in terms of skilled nursing staffing. The facility provided approximately 1.5 times as many registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average nursing home. This is what we look for when grading a nursing home in this category. The final statistic we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Maine in this area with 64.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for its nursing grade. There are quite a few datapoints within this grade. Many of these datapoints are tied to staffing levels. This facility boasts a really impressive 5.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, of which a significant percentage was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality measures we assessed. With less than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared as well as any place the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers could be avoided by providing better nursing care and having a policy of turning residents at least once a day.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its amazing profile, this nursing home has also earned near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. This made for a perfect report card for this place. Our inspection scores are tied to many items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this category have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This place received 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies an imminent risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
