Registered Staff Hours
Long-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our long-term care grade. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. After we finished assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly can be a life threatening illness for nursing home patients so we like it when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this was not one of this facility's strong suits. We awarded it a grade of D in this category. Clearly, this facility performed much better in the categories discussed above. When computing our nursing grades, we factor in both nursing hours and the training levels of those nurses. This place averaged only 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is an alarmingly low total. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we analyzed is short-term care, which ended up being this nursing home's least impressive area. We gave this nursing home a D in that area. Of course, this score pulled down the facility's overall grade to a certain degree. Short-term care grades are typically used to gauge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To provide highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. It appears that this facility was subpar in multiple staffing areas we focus on. In fact, it provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 0 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
