One of the many reasons this place ended up being a great nursing home is that it earned an A+ inspection grade. This is as good as it gets in this critical area. Our inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. This facility received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Contributing to this facility's list of achievements, it also was awarded a fine short-term care score. We awarded them a dominant grade of A- in this area. Our short-term care grades are likely more critical for folks needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually utilizes additional skilled nursing services. This means not just nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. One of this place's strengths is physical therapy. We found that it offers at least one and a half times as many hours of physical therapy than most other facilities. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in New York in this area with 66.5 percent of its residents returning home.

Additionally, this facility also received favorable long-term care scores this year. Indeed, we awarded them one of our stronger grades in that area, with a score of B+. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. One of the factors we considered after nursing hours was vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. This is a great way to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the senior population. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. While it had 2.06 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was close to the middle of the pack due to it having more complex patients.

The last category we rated is nursing. We gave it an abysmal F for this category, which is a rock bottom score. We would not necessarily dismiss a facility as a result of one poor grade though. We scrutinized the levels of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of time those nurses worked with residents, in determining our grade in this category. This particular nursing home provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. Although this facility did not excel in the area of nursing hours, it actually surprised us in some of the quality-based assessments in the nursing category, such as avoiding major falls. This facility was above average in this metric, which was one redeeming quality we found in this category.
