Registered Staff Hours
Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality facility is it received a very impressive short-term care grade. Short-term care is its best category. In that category, we gave this nursing home an A-. In crafting these short-term care scores, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that 5.5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
Nurse Quality
This facility received high grades in the area of nursing as well. In fact, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. When determining a facility's nursing grade, we look at the number of hours nurses spend with patients as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving patients more often.

Facility Inspections
In addition, this nursing home also earned top notch inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our more favorable grades in that area, with an impressive grade of B+. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this category typically have very few of these severe deficiencies. This place received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to resident safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we scored ended up being this nursing home's poorest area. However, even in its worst category we still awarded it an acceptable grade of C for long-term care. In the category of long-term care, we focus more on the amount of care offered by a nursing home, rather than more medically-intensive services. One of the statistics we considered after nursing hours was vaccines. Thankfully, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Finally, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
