Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of looking at the impressive level of care provided by nurses and other staff at this nursing home, we also were pleased by the nursing home's vaccination data. For example, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. This combination proved to be successful as this facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.47 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
Another reason we assessed this nursing home so highly is that it was awarded an A+ short-term care grade. This is just about as strong as it gets in this category. In computing our short-term care scores, we size up a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This score is frequently a meaningful assessment of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. One of this facility's strengths is registered nurse hours. This facility provides more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last metric we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. It fared as well as just about any facility in Florida in this area with 70.2 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively minor. This place was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our next category, this facility was given a high-end nursing rating. We awarded it a grade of A in that category, rounding out a straight A profile. Nursing ratings are tied to quality and quantity of nursing care. This facility provides an incredible 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. Very few nursing homes provide this quantity of nursing care to their patients. Out of that total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing high levels of care, this facility also excelled in several of the quality measures we assessed. With below five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Florida in this category. This is generally a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers could be prevented by offering better nursing care and a policy of moving residents more frequently.
