Facility Inspections
We want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility outperformed its overall grade in the area of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our best grades in this area with an A. Arguably the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we awarded this nursing home a B in our long-term care category. This is one of our more favorable scores. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. One of the statistics we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This is a proven method to minimize unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the senior population. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
This nursing home's nursing grade appears to be one of its better features. The facility received a grade of B- in this category. Our nursing grade considers numerous factors. The most heavily weighted one is the quantity of hours nurses spent with patients. This place averages 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is well below average. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures. While this facility got dinged a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it excelled in some of these quality-based measures. With less than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it did very well in this subcategory. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a system of turning patients even once per day.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to the last area, this nursing home received a grade of C in short-term care, which is an acceptable grade. In forming these short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our goal is to create a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.
