Facility Inspections
In addition to being an elite nursing home overall, this facility also performed well in the area of inspections, where it received an A+. Very few facilities fared this well in this area. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Among its many impressive scores, this nursing home was awarded an excellent long-term care score. In fact, it received a score of A in this category. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 99.65398 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 3.36 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this wasn't as favorable as most of its other scores in this category, this figure can be skewed for some facilities due to some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
We also would like to draw your attention to the fact that this facility was given a superb score of A in our short-term care area. In computing our short-term care ratings, we size up a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is generally a fair measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. This place offered more registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The last statistic we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Florida in this area with 62.2 percent of its patients returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The next area we assessed was nursing. We gave this facility a solid score in this category, with a grade of B-. Even though this wasn't as high as several of its other grades, it is still a middle of the pack score. Our nursing score assesses the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of licensure of those nurses and the quantity of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provides a somewhat concerning 3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Nevertheless, more than one fourth of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We add more significance to these skilled nursing hours in calculating our nursing scores. Finally, nursing grades also consider quality-based measures, such as preventing major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours per resident, this place performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is generally a good indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Some falls could be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its patients.
