Nurse Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. Our nursing grade considers a host of subcategories. The most heavily weighted variable is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This facility provides an impressive 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. Out of this total, more than one fourth of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. We apply more weight to hours provided by skilled nurses in determining our nursing grades. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This place performed very well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its impressive category scores, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A. Inspection grades account for several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this area usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we analyzed was short-term care. Contributing to its high-end resume, this nursing home also excelled in this area. In fact, it received a of A- for that area. In the category of short-term care, we endeavor to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. When we assessed this nursing home's nursing hours, we found it offered substantially more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last statistic we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We found that it was above average in this area with 50.1 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at is long-term care, in which this facility received a B. Believe it or not, this turned out to be this facility's worst category. A nursing home is doing something right when their poorest grade still beats out most nursing homes. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in long-term care typically provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure patients are well cared for. One of the statistics we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a reliable method to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the nursing home population. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
