Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

It should also be noted that this place's long-term care score outpaced its overall grade. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B+ for its long-term care grade, which is one of our better grades. This boosted its overall score. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 97.560974 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is more than the average nursing home. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

This facility also excelled in inspections, where it earned an B+. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This place was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies an imminent risk to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. There are quite a few subcategories included in this grade. Most of the criteria are tied to the quantity of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This figure is significantly below average. Finally, nursing scores also consider quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this facility performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is typically an indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place. Many falls could be avoided if a facility supplies enough nurses aids to assist its residents.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The final category we graded was short-term care, which ended up being a weak link for this nursing home. We awarded this facility a grade of just D for our short-term care category. In computing our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our goal is to devise a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final statistic we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 5 percent of its residents returning home. This was quite a bit below the national average.
