Medina Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility

To go along with its strong overall score, we gave this facility an A+ for inspections. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be quite minor. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 99.13043 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Contributing to its remarkable profile, this facility also received a superb short-term care score, with a score of A-. In determining our short-term care scores, we assess a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This category is typically a meaningful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who returned home from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents were able to return home.

Moving on to our final category, this facility received an excellent nursing rating. We gave it a B+ in that category, finishing off one of our better report cards. The nursing score consists of quite a few subcategories, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of moving residents at least once a day.
