Short-term Care Quality
We awarded this facility one of our better grades in short-term care, where it earned an A+. This is notably better than its overall score, which was certainly not elite. Short-term care grades are often used to grade a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally must provide better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. Finally, we looked at the number of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home with 65.2 percent of its patients returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this statistic.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its favorable grade in nursing. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of A. The nursing score considers several factors. The most heavily weighted one is the quantity of hours nurses spent with patients. This nursing home provides an incredible 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day. Very few nursing homes provide this quantity of nursing care to their patients. Out of that total, many of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home the nation. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be prevented if more nurses and better safety protocols are in place.
Facility Inspections
Unfortunately, this nursing home did not earn a favorable inspection rating. We gave it a grade of just D in this area. One of the more significant factors in assessing inspection reports is deficiencies. We would scrutinize the severity of the deficiencies. This particular nursing home was assessed 6 deficiencies by government inspectors. The only positive thing we found is that none of the deficiencies were in the categories that suggest that they caused a risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility also received 27 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to the next category, we gave this nursing home a D in long-term care. This is the nursing home's worst category score. Sadly, this category pulled down the facility's overall profile to a certain degree. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. With a long-term care grade in this range, we were surprised to discover that this facility performed relatively well in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 98.68996 percent of its patients. This statistic is actually better than the average nursing home. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. With 1.75 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility did not fare quite as well.
