Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a quality facility overall, this nursing home really excelled in the area of short-term care, where it earned an A-. In computing our short-term care grades, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to create a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return home from this facility. It outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the nation with 62.1 percent of its residents returning home. This is a much higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. In that category, we gave this facility an A-. Our nursing grade focuses on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of licensure of the nurses as well as the amount of time spent with patients. This facility provided 5.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by these statistics. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering falls leading to major injury, this nursing home performed as well as any facility Michigan. Avoiding serious falls is generally a good indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is among our highest scores. These inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This place was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies an immediate threat to resident safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to our last category, this facility was given a decent long-term care score. Although this isn't nearly as dominant as a few of its other scores, this is still not the end of the world. Our long-term care grade focuses on a facility's personal care rather than the skilled nursing and medical services that are critical to a skilled nursing facility. While we determined this nursing home had a favorable volume of nursing hours provided by aids and other nursing staff, we found its vaccination rate to be a bit slightly lower than we anticipated. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to just 86.03774 percent of its residents. This is a figure we'd really like to see this facility improve. The last datapoint we assessed was its hospitalization rate. Although it had 2.25 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was not as bad.
