On top of having a decent overall score, we also wanted to note that this facility received favorable nursing marks this year. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a B+. This proved to be the facility's top grade. There are numerous datapoints included in this category. Many of these factors reflect staffing levels. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Kansas in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of turning residents at least once a day.

This facility's inspection grade also was better than its overall score. Due to a quality inspection report this year, it received one of our better scores in that category with a B. Our inspection scores account for several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Remember that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

This facility received its next highest category score in the area of long-term care. We gave this nursing home a B- in this category, which is a decent score. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. One of the factors we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. We were a bit alarmed this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to only 72.5 percent of its residents. Nevertheless, this facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Switching gears to the last category, this facility was awarded a decent short-term care score of C. In the area of short-term care, we seek to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Unfortunately, we were not able to track down information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 4.7 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
