Facility Inspections

Grade: A

While this nursing home's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category, which is one of our best scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection ratings. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these can be relatively minor. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

We also want to point out that this facility received a decent grade in our nursing category. We awarded it a grade of C in the area. Our nursing grade is primarily based on a facility's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided just 0.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This figure is significantly below the national average. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place actually fared better in some of the quality measures we looked at. It performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

We awarded this facility a grade of just D for our short-term care score. This is not a very good score. In forming our short-term care scores, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to create a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Considering its grade in this category, we were not surprised to learn that this nursing home is well below average in terms of its number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 4.2 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The final category we assessed was long-term care. This facility was given an abysmal grade of F in this category. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to find that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
