Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was decent, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our best scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being relatively insignificant. This place received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a strong grade in long-term care. This nursing home received a grade of B+ in this category, which turns out to be one of our better grades. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in long-term care typically provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure patients are kept in good health. One of the datapoints we considered after nursing hours is vaccinations. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. This is a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the nursing home population. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the area of short-term care, this facility received just a D in that area. Our short-term care scores are thought to be most critical for patients needing a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically mandates more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not only nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Based on its score in this area, we were not surprised to discover that this place was well below average in terms of the quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Honestly, this was about what we expected to find. The last statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. This facility a bit in this metric as well, with just 46.5 percent of its residents returning home. This was below the national average.
Nurse Quality
This facility's least impressive area is nursing, which is the last area we looked at. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this area. In spite of several solid scores in other categories, this score is still of a concern so we felt obligated to make a note of it. There are a variety of criteria within this grade. Most of these factors relate to nurse staffing. With a meager 2.6 hours of nursing care per resident each day, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were significantly below the national average. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing ratings. This nursing home performed well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
