Facility Inspections
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received an impressive inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in that category with an A-. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that had too many severe deficiencies. This nursing home was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to be an immediate risk to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to the category of long-term care, this nursing home was awarded a grade of just D in this area. Unfortunately, this ended up being one of its better features. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 98.960495 percent of its residents. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility fared much worse with 3.19 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this statistic is nearly twice the national average.
Short-term Care Quality
In our next category, we gave this facility an F in the category of short-term care. Our short-term care ratings are crucial for patients seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes more skilled nursing. This means a vast range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. It appears that this facility was below average in many staffing areas we assessed. In fact, it provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 33.8 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics sunk this facility's short-term care score.
Nurse Quality
The last area we rated is nursing, where this facility received a rock bottom grade here as well. It received an abysmal F in this area, which is obviously a major concern. We scrutinized the skill-level of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the quantity of hours the nurses were with residents, in determining our score in this category. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics hurt this facility's nursing grade quite a bit.
