Long-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of long-term care. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of providing well above average levels of nurse staffing, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This statistic is also much better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 3.12 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this area, this statistic can be skewed for some nursing homes based on some of the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Facility Inspections
Turning to our inspection category, this facility excelled in that area, which is based on the nursing home's recent government inspections. We awarded it an A for that category. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility received a favorable short-term care score as well. We gave it one of our better scores in that area with a grade of B. Our short-term care grade is generally used to assess a nursing home's rehabilitation services In order to have quality rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its residents. The last statistic we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it was respectable in this area with 48.9 percent of its patients able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The final category we graded was nursing. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a solid grade of B-. This turned out to be this facility's weakest category. In calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the quantity of hours nurses are seeing patients and the levels of training of those nurses. This facility provided 4.6 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which was among the higher totals we found. Lastly, we also factored some quality-based metrics into our nursing grades. Specifically, we looked at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these data points as good measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
