Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

We want to point out that this nursing home outperformed its overall grade in the area of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that area with an A+. Inspection grades are based on many pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this area have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor dings aren't necessarily something to panic about.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

We also awarded this facility a middle of the pack score in the category of short-term care, with a grade of B-. With our short-term care grade, we attempt to create a meaningful measure for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we look at the nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 5.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home's next most favorable category was long-term care. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. This is essentially a slightly below average score in this area. For residents looking for a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is an important category. One of the statistics we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. Fortunately, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 99.49622 percent of its residents. This facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The next area we looked at was nursing, which turned out to be this nursing home's least impressive category. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in this area. Sadly, this grade hurt the facility's overall grade to a certain degree. Our nursing grade is based on many subcategories, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. On top of receiving below average scores for total nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients suffering pressure ulcers and found that this place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this metric. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic dragged down this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.
