In addition to being a respectable nursing home overall, this facility really excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this category. Our inspection ratings are tied to several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in this industry.

This facility also excelled in nursing, where it earned a grade of B. In determining our nursing ratings, we weigh both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of moving a patient more frequently.

The third area we looked at is long-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of B- in this area. Long-term care grades are commonly used to grade a facility's performance as a traditional convalescent home, as opposed to focusing more on the skilled nursing services provided by a skilled nursing facility. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the average nursing home. This nursing home keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Turning to our final area, this nursing home was given a decent short-term care score of C. Short-term care grades are important for patients needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a wide scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last item we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that just 4.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.
