Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this area typically have few of these severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

One of the other reasons we rated this facility so favorably is that it was awarded a favorable long-term care score. In fact, long-term care is its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a score of A. Facilities that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are kept in good health. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 99.68454 percent of its patients, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. With 1.93 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home was close to average in this area.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-. This facility didn't perform quite as well in this category as it did in some other categories. Nevertheless, this is still a respectable score. In calculating our nursing ratings, we look at both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, this nursing home was relatively weak in some of the metrics we focus on, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next category we rated ended up being this facility's weakest area. However, even in its weakest link we still awarded it an acceptable grade of B- for our short-term care category. In determining these short-term care ratings, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to create a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The last metric we considered in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place was respectable in this area with 46.4 percent of its patients returning home.
