Facility Inspections
This facility earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We gave them an A- in this category. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
Additionally, we also wanted to point out that this facility was awarded strong short-term care marks this year. We gave them one of our more impressive scores in this category, with a grade of B+. This proved to be the nursing home's second strongest grade. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to gauge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. This facility performed much better in the final metric we looked at in this category, which was the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Illinois in this area with 69.4 percent of its patients returning home. With most facilities, less than half of the short-term residents ever return home.
Long-term Care Quality
As it turns out, this facility only earned a D for its long-term care score, which is not one of our better scores. Facilities that do not fare well in long-term care often do not provide as much nursing care and also may be lagging in a few of the areas of routine personal care we assessed. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. Candidly, we were a bit alarmed this nursing home vaccinated 90.72165 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is significantly below what we were hoping for. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.29 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is also a cause for concern.
Nurse Quality
The last area we looked at is nursing, which is a weak link for this nursing home. We gave this facility a grade of D in nursing. Nursing ratings are primarily tied to the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. To go along with its below average total nursing hours per resident, this nursing home had poor marks in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing falls leading to serious injury. This place was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is quite concerning in light of the fact that many falls could likely be avoided with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of earning a poor nursing score.
