Facility Inspections
While we were fairly low on this nursing home overall, we awarded it a grade of A- for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid facilities that have a long list of deficiencies. This nursing home received 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS did not consider any of these deficiencies to be an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
The second most favorable area we gave this nursing home in any area came in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of B-. For patients seeking a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.71 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility received an F for its short-term care score. In determining our short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This rating is typically a meaningful measure of a facility's rehabilitation. With a grade in this range for this area, we weren't stunned to learn this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing metrics we focus on. The facility provided substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. The last statistic we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 38.2 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below average.
Nurse Quality
The next category we assessed is nursing. This facility was given a very poor grade of F in this area. The nursing grade considers many factors. The most heavily weighted variable is the amount of time nurses spend with residents. This particular place offered just 2.8 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This figure is well below average. On top of rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor scores in the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these data points. This is a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These scores pulled down this facility's nursing grade quite a bit.
