In addition to being a first rate nursing home overall, this facility also excelled at short-term care, where it received a grade of A. Our short-term care scores are based in part on the facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a vast spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. It does not look like this nursing home submitted information on registered nurse or physical therapist staffing. The last metric we assessed in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return home. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of moving a resident more often.

The last category we looked at is long-term care. This nursing home was given a strong nursing rating in our assessment, with a grade of B. Even though this is not nearly as strong as several of its other category grades, this is still one of the more favorable scores in that area. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly can be a life or death condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
