Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

This facility received a strong overall grade as described above, but we especially wanted to point out its nearly flawless health inspections in recent years. We gave them an A- in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. This particular nursing home received 8 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a good inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

We also gave this facility a grade of A- for our long-term care grade. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. One of the datapoints we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This is a proven method to avoid negative health outcomes for the aged 65 and up population. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. Nursing scores are based largely on quantity of nursing care available. This facility provided 0.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning a resident more frequently.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Moving on to our next area, we awarded this facility a grade of D in our short-term care category. This was the nursing home's least impressive category rating. Naturally, this score hurt the nursing home's overall grade to a certain degree. Our short-term care scores are believed to be most important for individuals requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of skilled nursing services. This includes not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 2.4 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
