Short-term Care Quality
To pair with its strong overall score, we awarded this nursing home an elite grade of A+ for its short-term care rating. In determining our short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to devise a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who ultimately returned home from this nursing home. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy staffing, we found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in the country in this area with 67.5 percent of its residents returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this metric.
Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be quite minor. This facility was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that the inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. Our nursing rating focuses on the facility's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This facility provides an incredible 4.5 hours of nursing care per resident each day. Very few nursing homes provide this quantity of nursing care to their patients. Out of that total, many of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to providing impressive levels of care, this nursing home was also above average in several of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. It performed well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
The fourth category we scored is long-term care, where this facility was given an A. This rounded out an elite profile. Not many facilities earned an A- or higher in each of our categories. In a long-term care setting, the primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. This nursing home's vaccination data were not as impressive as its nursing hours data. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 88.97638 percent of its patients. We'd love to see some improvement in this area next year. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, we were pleased to find facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
