We also wanted to emphasize that this nursing home earned an impressive grade of A in our short-term care category. Short-term care grades are meaningful for people needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a vast range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility in the nation in this area with 66.8 percent of its residents returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this metric.

This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. Inspection scores are tied to items found on the a nursing home's government inspections. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.

Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. When computing a facility's nursing grade, we weigh the number of hours nurses are seeing patients and the level of skill of those nurses. This nursing home boasts a really impressive 4.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day, of which a significant portion was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of care, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this nursing home performed as well as any facility the country. Avoiding serious falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be prevented if more nurses and better safety protocols are employed.

The last area we rated proved to be this nursing home's weakest area. However, even in its weakest link we still awarded it a respectable grade of B- for our long-term care category. For long-term care residents, the primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. While we determined this facility had an above average amount of nursing hours provided by aids and other nursing staff, we found its vaccine statistics to be a bit low. It gave the pneumonia vaccine to just 87.03704 percent of its residents. This is one statistic we would like to see this facility improve. On a more positive note, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
