On top of being a great nursing home overall, it also earned A+ government inspections recently. Its inspections are virtually flawless. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category usually have few of these severe deficiencies. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to pose an immediate threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

This first-rate facility also excelled in the category of short-term care, where it received a score of A+. Few facilities performed better in this category. In calculating these short-term care scores, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. The last metric we assessed in this area is the number of patients who returned home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Oregon in this area with 64.5 percent of its residents returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category. Our nursing rating weighs a number of subcategories. The most heavily weighted variable is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This facility provided 4.9 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This was one of the better totals we found. Furthermore, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls resulting in serious injury, this facility performed as well as any nursing home the nation. Avoiding major falls is generally an indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are employed.

Moving on to our next area, this facility received a respectable long-term care score. While this isn't nearly as dominant as some of its other category grades, this is still nothing to be ashamed of. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 91.489365 percent of its residents. This is slightly lower than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable figure. Nevertheless, this place keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
