The primary reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection grade. Its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A-. Inspection ratings are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple relatively minor deficiencies are not something to panic about.

This nursing home also excelled in nursing, where it received an B. Our nursing rating is mostly based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This place excelled in these areas, with excellent scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care a facility provides.

This nursing home also received a favorable short-term care score. As a matter of fact, we awarded them a B in that category, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. In calculating our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The final statistic we looked at in this area is the number of patients who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed better than most nursing homes in this area with 53.6 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

This facility's weakest area was long-term care, which is the last category we looked at. For this area, we gave this nursing home a grade of D. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. After considering the amount of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. We were optimistic to discover that this nursing home vaccinates 96.25468 percent of its patients against pneumonia. To our surprise, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.21 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
