This nursing home excelled in our short-term care category, with an A+ in this category. This really boosted its overall grade. In determining our short-term care grades, we scrutinize the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This rating is frequently a solid assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Michigan in this area with 73.2 percent of its patients returning home.

One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we gave this nursing home an B+. Our nursing score looks at the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This place provides an impressive 7 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Out of this total, nearly one fourth of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is among the most highly skilled levels of nurses. Lastly, we also factored a few quality-based metrics into our nursing ratings. This nursing home was on the weaker side in two of the datapoints we look at, with below average figures for minimizing its patients' major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are often reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care available.

This nursing home also was given an impressive score in our long-term care category. We gave this facility a better than average grade of B in that area. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a life threatening condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Turning our last category of inspections, this facility received a grade that's as bad as it gets. Unfortunately, with an F in the inspection category, this nursing home's overall grade was pulled down significantly. For places that received this poor of an inspection score, we would scrutinize any severe deficiencies on its inspection report. This nursing home was hit with 5 deficiencies by government inspectors. The only favorable thing we found is that none of the deficiencies were in the categories that indicate they created a threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility also received a substantiated complaint in the last few years. There seem to be no shortage of reasons to pass on this facility.
