Registered Staff Hours
The main reason this nursing home received a decent overall score is its impeccable inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our better scores in that category, with an A-. This is a much better score than the place's overall grade, which was decent but certainly not elite. Our inspection grades weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this area typically have very few severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This indicates that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies an immediate risk to resident safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's next most favorable area was short-term care. We awarded it a B- in this category. This is basically a middle of the road score in this category. In the category of short-term care, we try to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. In this nursing home's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than a typical facility. The final item we assessed in this area is the number of residents that returned home from the facility. We found that just 5.1 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
Does this page answer your questions about Symphony Maple Crest?
One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of nursing care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. Our nursing rating consists of many components, however, the paramount one is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a lower figure than we were hoping for. Finally, nursing grades also consider quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this facility actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is usually a good indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Some falls could be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its patients.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we analyzed is long-term care, was this nursing home's least impressive category. We awarded this nursing home a D in that area. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is more than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this place also keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
