This nursing home really excelled in the area of short-term care, where it earned an A-. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. If it was not for this grade, this nursing home's overall grade would have been much lower. Our short-term care scores are critical for people in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a vast scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes with 67.7 percent of its patients returning home.

Inspections is another area where this facility excelled. We gave this nursing home an B+ for our inspections category. This grade is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.

This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of C in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. The nursing rating includes a number of factors. The most important variable is the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents. This particular nursing home provided just 2.7 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This figure is significantly below the national average. Lastly, we like to look at quality-based metrics, such as the percentage of patients who experienced pressure ulcers and major falls. These metrics are indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Long-term Care Quality

Historical

This nursing home's least impressive area was long-term care, which is the last area we looked at. Sadly, it received an F in this area. In spite of some respectable scores in other categories, this score is still disappointing so we would like to to draw your attention to it. Facilities that receive this type of score in this category likely don't provide the kind of consistent around the clock care that some other facilities provide. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. We were concerned by the fact that this nursing home vaccinated only 71.31474 percent of its residents for pneumonia. To our surprise, this place was not as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Although it had 1.89 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not bad since it had more complicated patients.
